Sports That Cause Most Ankle Injuries

Tuesday, 20 September 2022 00:00

Sports that cause the most ankle injuries are football, basketball, soccer, tennis, and running. Football is a rough sport that can cause, among other things, high ankle sprains. A high ankle sprain is an injury that happens from the outward twisting of the foot or ankle. Basketball can cause Achilles tendonitis, which is a swelling of the Achilles tendon linking the heel bone to the calf muscle. Soccer injuries include ankle sprains and ankle impingement, a condition where bone spurs develop on the ankle bones. Tennis requires players to run fast in a small area and make sudden changes of direction, causing them to be susceptible to stress fractures and ankle sprains. Running can cause similar injuries. If you participate in these sports, it is important to wear proper footwear for the sport you are participating in, warm up properly, and remain alert while at play. It is also suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who will not only be able to help you if injuries to the feet and ankles occur, but also educate you on ways to prevent common injuries.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with Loren Hansen, DPM from Ankle & Foot Medical Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.
